Reviews about the book:

What the critics say about the book:

This man is in the news. This man is news. This man makes news. Any wonder why a book by his name will not sell. In fact when I began reading the book while commuting to work, I had to cover the book because various strangers asking me to show the book to them. After the 11 September 2001 incident of the bombing of the World Trade Centre, Osama Bin Laden is a name that even a child recognizes. Well. Who is this man and what does his thinking sound like and what does he portend for the future of the world? Luis Vas has really been quick on the draw to do speedy research and pen a book that puts the man in right perspective. And all within the space of a month. But this is not a quickie for Vas has in fact done his homework and has got all his facts properly marshalled.
In his introduction Vas portrays the surprise that hit the world with the 11 September bombing. ‘‘The attack on America has been almost unanimously characterized as the worst in this century, an even greater blow than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. It should be remembered that the suicide bombers who carried out the operation at the expense of their own lives did so, obviously not of an allegiance to a lone figure, but to an ideology that nurses and sustains an undying hatred of America. This is evident from the contents of a letter in Arabic found in the luggage of three of the hijackers. ‘‘The introduction goes on to mention that the US would do well to spend more time and effort in analyzing the reasons for worldwide terrorism. He moans the lack of cultural sensitivity to the concerns of others, is probably one of the causes of the rampart anti-Americanism brewing worldwide.
The book begins by telling the reader who is Osama Bin Laden. You get a near perfect description of him including his height, his date of birth, his complexion, and his place of birth. You also get his nine aliases. You also learn that he is one of the several children of his father’s several wives. Something of his educational background is revealed. He also earned fame as a fearless fighter in Afghanistan but the CIA deny this. However, he did become the favourite of the American government in the 70s and soon became anti-American thereafter.
The next section is followed by the FAQ’s about Osama Bin Laden viz, where is he, how does he communicate, why did he declare a jihad against the USA and how does he disguise his movements. Also questions related to Al Qaeda are placed before the reader so that the reader gets the full picture of the deadly organization that has been actively involved in terrorism. And then the all important question: why we haven’t been able to grab him so far? Yes why not? Doesn’t it sound like our own situation with Veerappan?
We next come closer to the man and get the truth from the horse’s mouth with his comments on the Saudi royal family, his jihad against the USA, the significance of the Afghan war, and on funding international terrorism. He also explains his point of view on some of the terrorist attack that have taken place all over the world.
The highlight of the book is Osama Bin Laden and the US intelligence failure. It is apparent that the US had prior information of some sort of attack but when it happened they were completely immobilized. The book didcusses the nature of global terrorism and Bin Laden’s impact on Kashmir. Vas debated the real meaning of fundamentalism that we should be beware of. He concludes that the question whether we will have the clash of civilization or the clash with terrorism. You may of course draw your own conclusion.

Santan Rodrigues in Free Press Journal

The man who has struck terror in the hearts of Americans, the man who has dared to take on the might of the greatest super power, remains a mystery and an enigma for the world today!
This book is an expose of the background and history of Osama Bin Laden, his family and fortunes, his thinking and ideology and what led to it – and above all about his extensive network A-Qaeda (The Base) that’s spread over 35 countries. The exhaustive and comprehensive research is supported by the most influential sources, including CIA and FBI records, international coverages and media reports.
