Most people don’t acknowledge their mistakes. I acknowledge that I broke the earthen pot. The second use of the term acknowledge, is to report about something that one has received. For example: We acknowledge with thanks your good services in the company. It is also used to convey or to report that one has received the letter or information sent to him/her. I acknowledge with thanks your reply as well as the gifts sent by you.
Across
A common meaning of across is from one side to the other side. Last night, I walked across the bridge when it was very dark. Her house is just across the street. The other meaning of across is to convey some event or happening. I came across an old man in the street who was bearing a red turban. It simply means I happened to meet the old man bearing a red turban.

The student admitted his guilt in front of the principal. The use of the term, admit in this situation is always related to some sort of guilt or mistake or unworthy doing. When some furniture or utensil is broken in a house, often no one would admit to have done it. Thus, admit simply means to accept or to acknowledge.
